General definition: The expression trauma (greek.: wound), plural trauma, means an emotional response to a terrible event or series of events, such as accidents, rape or natural disasters.
Definitions of the two common medical coding classification systems (ICD-10 und DSM-IV):
- ICD-10: Arises as a delayed or protracted response to a stressful event or situation (of either brief or long duration) of an exceptionally threatening or catastrophic nature, which is likely to cause pervasive distress in almost anyone.
- DSM-IV: The person experienced, witnessed, or was confronted with an event or events that involved actual or threatened death or serious injury, or a threat to the physical integrity of self or others.
